You’ve heard the stories—towering canyons, roaring waterfalls, scenic overlooks—and now you’re ready to experience Starved Rock for yourself. But before you lace up your hiking boots, there’s one big question: Where do I park?
Good news—Starved Rock Hikers has the best information on everything Starved Rock, Matthiessen, and Buffalo Rock State Parks. Click here to view our parking page, with key information and directions to each parking lot.
Whether you’re here for a quick photo op or a full-day adventure, here’s how to find the best spot for your plans.
1. The Main Lot: Start Here if You’re Unsure
Heading to the Visitor Center, hiking classic trails like French Canyon or heading toward Lover’s Leap? This is the place. The Main Lot fills quickly, especially on weekends, so arrive early if you can. If it’s full, don’t worry—we’ve got alternatives.

2. Overflow Lot: Your Plan B (Just up the road)
Located up from the Main Lot across from the Lodge, this Overflow Lot is your next best bet. It offers a short walk back to the Lodge, Visitor Center and trailheads, and often has open spots when others are full.
3. Lodge Parking: For Dining, Relaxing, or a Short Hike
If you’re planning to grab a bite at Starved Rock Lodge, check out their parking lot. You can hike to nearby overlooks like Eagle Cliff, take the old ‘billygoat’ trail to St. Louis Canyon, or take the Lodge-to-Visitor Center trail for a scenic warm-up.
4. Route 71 Lots: Access Hidden Gems
Want fewer crowds and a more peaceful start? Parking lots off Route 71 give you access to some underrated trails:
Council Overhang & Ottawa Canyon Lot
Illinois Canyon Lot
LaSalle & Tonti Canyon Lot
These are great for experienced hikers or those looking for something different.
5. Matthiessen State Park: Waterfalls, Dells & River Trails
Just down the road, Matthiessen is a gem of its own. Choose from:
Dells Area Lot (for dramatic canyons and waterfalls)
Vermilion River Area Lot (for fishing and river walks)
6. Parking Tips to Know Before You Go
Arrive early (before 10 a.m.) to secure a spot, especially on weekends.
Parking is free at all locations.
No shuttles run between lots—park where you plan to hike.
Always lock your vehicle and don’t leave valuables inside.
Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, catching sunrise views, or just stretching your legs, your Starved Rock adventure starts with parking smart. We’ll see you out on the trail.
