Length

2.5 hr

Difficulty

About the Hike:

By starting the 3 mile roundtrip hike at the Visitor Center and taking the bluff trail, you will have the opportunity to see three canyons: Aurora, Kickapoo, and Sac, all along the way to St. Louis Canyon. St. Louis Canyon features the tallest ice fall in the park, and Aurora Canyon also often features an ice fall. These canyons are named after Native American tribes. St. Louis Canyon is also the site of the infamous Starved Rock Murders.

Suggested Route:

Start at Visitors Center – go up past lodge on way to St. Louis, see Aurora, Sac, and Kickapoo Canyon, all on way to St. Louis Canyon. Then, head back to Visitors Center lot.

Difficulty:

Moderate

A few staircases to descend down prior to entering the canyon (can be icy in winter). Since this is an in-and-out trail, staircases must be climbed on the return and a somewhat step grade paved hill is on the trail (ice).
